Financial Institutions - There are 10 commercial and savings banks in Winchester and
Randolph County. Together with small loan companies, they make up the financial community.
Shopping - Two shopping centers are located at the east edge of Winchester as well as
the traditional shopping area around the courthouse square. Regional and national
franchises predominate in the shopping centers and specialty stores predominate the
downtown area. Winchester boasts of 15 restaurants serving a variety of cuisines and
3 catering services are available at five different locations. Three modern supermarkets
as well as numerous convenience stores aid shoppers in Winchester's bustling retail centers.
Manufacturing - Winchester and Randolph County enjoy a strong and diversified economy.
The dozens of manufacturing firms in the area include a wide range of products including
glass containers and components, pies and pie shells, silver ingots, lumber products,
caskets, kitchen cabinets, aluminum castings, aluminum and cast iron foundries, glass
moulds, manufactured housing, and lawn mower motors. International corporations including
Anchor Glass container, Maul Technology, and OMCO Metal Products are all well known within
the glass community. SilverTowne, one of the world's best known coin dealerships and mints
is located in Winchester. Additionally, Wicks' Pies, the baker of over 10 million pie
products shipped throughout the United States, has their corporate offices as well as
factory located in Winchester.
After manufacturing, agriculture is the major contributor to the economy of Winchester
and Randolph county. Nearly 1,300 farms in the county make up 266,000 acres.
Annual production includes some 10 million bushels of corn, 3.2 million bushels of soybeans,
and 1.5 million bushels of wheat. Livestock population including 677,000 hogs, over a
million hens and pullets, 15,000 beef cattle and 2,100 dairy cattle. Nearly 23 million
pounds of milk are produced in the county yearly.
Lodging Facilities - Despite the large number of summer visitors, Winchester has limited
hotel and motel facilities. A locally owned motel offers 50 well kept and modern rooms.
Meeting facilities range from the 1,000 seat auditorium at the high school and 2,500 seat
fieldhouse to community rooms at banks, utilities, the Art Association depot, and churches.
South of town a Bed and Breakfast offers an alternative to the traditional motel.
